Racing to innovation: My solar car journey

Leading the electrical charge

As the electrical leader for our high school solar car team, I spearheaded the design and implementation of critical systems. My primary responsibility was to ensure the efficient operation of the car's propulsion system, a complex network that converted solar energy into motive power. Additionally, I managed the lower 12V system, crucial for powering the car's essential electronics and accessories. This role allowed me to apply theoretical electrical engineering knowledge to a tangible, high-stakes project, developing my skills in system integration, power management, and circuit optimization.

Track Success 

Our team celebrated significant successes at Texas Motor Speedway. In my junior year, we secured an impressive 3rd place in the Electric-Solar Powered Division, a testament to our hard work and collaborative spirit. Building on that momentum, my senior year brought even greater triumph as we clinched 2nd place in the same division. This achievement was particularly rewarding as we simultaneously set new personal records for the club. My contributions primarily involved optimizing the electrical systems for maximum efficiency and reliability, which directly impacted our car's performance and endurance during the races.

Overcoming engineering challenges

One of the most significant challenges we faced was the inefficiency of our solar panels, which struggled to adequately charge our battery, impacting overall performance. Compounding this, our wire management was highly disorganized, making troubleshooting incredibly difficult when issues arose. To address these problems, I led initiatives to research and integrate more efficient solar panel technologies. Simultaneously, I implemented a structured approach to wire management, creating detailed diagrams and labeling systems to improve organization and expedite fault diagnosis. These solutions not only enhanced our car's reliability but also significantly boosted our team's problem-solving capabilities.
